This will be our FIRST Christmas without her. Its going to be a tough one for the family.
My mother LOVED Christmas (despite her annual complaining of shopping.. lol 🙂 ) – THIS TIME OF YEAR was HER’s..
Christmas time was always big in our family.. Big as in celebrations.. Not gifts. When I was younger – we didn’t get as much stuff as kids do now a days. But we had tons & a lot more family around. We didn’t whine about wanting $200 shoes.. But we almost always got clothes. (including CHONIES!) And we didn’t cry about it. We didn’t sit on our phones or watching tv – we ran around, laughing, interacting with our cousins. Coloring, painting, playing hide and seek or just outside in the snow throwing snow balls or building forts and snowmen and angels.
Christmas Eve we would do a lot of driving around. Visiting everyone and then finally settling in at my grandparents house. They would have the Christmas music blasting out their speaker on the front of the house.. And oh believe me when I say – it wasn’t today’s “speaker” it was a painted sandy yellow metal one that was on the front door year round and hooked up to the old record player of theirs…
Christmas Day was spent at our home. Woken up by the sounds of “santa’s sleigh bells” that hung by the door.. We would jump up and dash downstairs to find a Christmas tree with gifts UNDER it (not stacked to the ceiling to fill the room) We Got TONS but we didn’t get more than what was needed.
Santa (aka my father) would come in and give us each a present and a kiss while my mother video taped it.. Then off Santa would go and in would come my father with his coffee ..
We would have – “its a wonderful life” muted but playing on the tv in the background AND xmas music going at the same time..
Someone was designated “gift giver” and had to wear the hat.. And ONE BY ONE we each opened ONE present .. everyone GOT THEIR TIME.. no one was rushed or drowned out by someone elses gift.
It was the BEST TIME OF YEAR…
Prior to Christmas – Me and my mother would put the tree up.. As i got older – I was allowed to decorate the mirrors with her “infamous” cling ons… (she discontinued them after i moved out of the house 🙁 )
I was also designated bottom of the tree decorator..
Bringing up the TRUNK of decorations (Oh you know which one I’m talking about, fam, That BIG BLACK DUSTY METAL ONE..) the one that nearly killed us carrying up from the basement.
We’d bring up the old CANISTERS of glass bulbs.. with the surplus of old worn out but oh so beautiful and delicate ornaments. So delicate, we where bound to break at least one EVERY year.
And the OLD FELT candle ornaments that gave me the heeby jeeby’s just touching them b’cus of the way they felt.. .. ick.. still gives me the heeby jeeby’s just REMEMBERING the feel of them.. OOF! lol..
Christmas Carols blasting – Lights Glowing – Warmth in the air while the piles of SNOW fell on the ground outside..
Then there was the annual baking of the cookies.. Oh man – did my mom and grandmother bake cookies.. 3 weeks straight – the house smelled of cookies and goodies..
Christmas was HER TIME..
Its the reason I decorate my own house the way I do..
Its the reason I LOVE listening to christmas carols so early…
Its the reason I LOVE the smell of cookies
Its the reason CHRISTMAS MEANT SO MUCH TO ME..
And – its the FIRST YEAR without her..
With that said – I know…
Deep down inside me..
Deep down in the pit of my soul..
The part that gives you that GUT FEELING..
The part that this HARSH WORLD makes you forget about..
DEEP DEEP DOWN..
She’s still here.. With Me.. With Us.. Thru it all.. During THIS TIME.
AND ALL TIME..
I MISS her – But, that’s INEVITABLE and I ALWAYS will.
And because she is not able to send out her Christmas cards to those she loved any more
I am offering this – For you to print out as an alternative.
I hope you like it.
And I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Enjoy your loved ones.
